Fifty thousand dollars ($50,000) awarded to Peter Santenello for the video "Poorest Region of America - What It Really Looks Like*." Santenello makes videos showing viewers a world that the media fails to capture with a focus on pure authentic interactions with locals. In this video, he highlights Southern West Virginia to Eastern Kentucky which is the largest region of economically distressed counties in the country. In many ways, it's a different America there. He explores what it feel like to travel through this region in Appalachia and highlights what the locals have to say.
* This award has been updated from the originally awarded work, The Man With No Legal Identity - Off the Grid in Appalachia, at the request of the creator. After filming and posting the video and award notice, Peter Santenello became aware of criminal investigations involving Titus, the video's subject. Due to this, Peter requested that IMI consider other works for the award. The IMI Board of Directors reviewed his request and decided to change the awarded work to Poorest Region of America - What It Really Looks Like.
